7 quick questions with the Aleksic twins
The multi-talented Aleksic twin sisters have gained a worldwide following. Through social media, Milena and Jelena let us follow their journey as twin sisters, yogis, influencers and business owners.
We recently had the chance to interview them. And we are so glad that the twin sisters chose to shed light on the ups and downs of being twins. Their honesty is refreshing and we hope that you will learn as much from them as we did. Enjoy!
1. Who are you and what do you do?
We are Milena and Jelena Aleksic, twin sisters (obviously :D) behind @aleksic_twins profile on Instagram. We are bloggers and influencers who believe in the magic of this life and do their best to convey that through photography. :)
Jelena is a certified Acrovinyasa yoga teacher and has a BS degree in Sports Science and Physical education. Milena is also a yogi, a mom to beautiful baby Selena and a Med school student.
We are both founders of our own activewear brand called @arthleticwear :)
All in all, there’s never a dull day in our book as we always have something going on. Hehehe.
2. How did you get started?
We joined Instagram about 5 years ago and one day we saw a photo of a yoga challenge so we decided to give it a try (we never did yoga before!).
After doing that challenge we got a bunch of new followers and people just gave us so much positive feedback that we fell in love with the platform. We just continued to grow from there and develop as human beings and creative individuals. The breaking point for us was when we saved up enough money to buy a DSLR. Before that, we would spend hours editing a single photo taken from a cellphone to make it look decent. :P We can’t express how much freedom to create we got when we finally had the right tools. It really transformed our creativity into a whole new dimension.
We still love learning new things and are always always always looking to do something new and original. It’s definitely something that helped us a lot to get to where we are now.
3. Do you see being a twin as a strength or weakness in getting to where you are today?
The journey wasn’t easy, but it is definitely a strength now.
Back in the days when we were in elementary school and high school, everyone bullied us for being identical. The kids were cruel and didn’t like anyone standing out from the rest. They called us “special” but not in a good way and made us feel like weirdos. It was a difficult period for us, but the good thing was that we weren’t alone. We had each other and going through hell only made our bond even stronger. We knew that what we had was a unique privilege and that’s what helped us survive through school.
A whole new universe opened up when we made our Instagram account and met people who were super kind and supportive. Unlike school kids, people on Instagram loved our uniqueness. They really helped boost our confidence and turn our “weakness” into strength. All we needed was a supportive community to let us shine. :)
4. What's your favorite twin moment?
It’s hard to think of just one, but probably our favorite moments are when we stay up late at night to talk about really deep topics. Hahaha, it’s just something we started doing from a very young age and it happens really spontaneously.
The topics we talk about are crazy, to say the least, like trying to understand the meaning of life or figuring out some crazy new idea that could make the world a better place.
5. When you argue, how long does it take for you to become friends?
The longest it took would be less than half an hour hahaha but usually, it’s always a matter of minutes before we burst into laughter and realize how silly we were. We don’t usually argue that often either.
Having a twin is a very unique thing. This is a person who was there with you from day 1, so you cannot be mad at them no matter what happens. There’s a deep level of understanding between us. It’s something we could never achieve with anyone else. We basically read each other’s thoughts and finish each other’s sentences hahaha How can you argue with that? :P
6. What do you think everyone should know about being twins?
Probably the most important thing would be that, even though we look almost identical, we are not the same person! We have been treated like we are one person, not two separate individuals, more than a handful of times. It’s a terrible and degrading thing, to say the least.
We agree on a lot of things, but we are also very different from each other and people should understand that. For example, Milena is more shy and introvert and Jelena is more friendly and extrovert. Milena is a genius for math and sciences, while Jelena is terrible at those. Jelena likes horror movies, while Milena hates them. See what we’re talking about?
Just because we share the same appearance doesn’t make us one person and this is something every twin will agree on. Everyone should take their time to get to know us, not just automatically assume that they know both of us if they know one twin. ;)
7. How would you rock a Twinning Store t-shirt?
Jelena would probably wear it with leggings or sweatpants and running shoes. :P
Milena would wear it with jeans or a skirt and stylish shoes. ;)
Our rapid-fire questions:
- Who is the bossiest?
- Who is the messiest?
- Who is most active on social media?
- Who is the more shy twin?
- Who is the more adventurous twin?
- Lastly, is there an evil twin?
Well, when we were little Milena would always blame every mischief on Jelena and get her in trouble, so… :P
Thank you, Milena and Jelena, for taking the time to let us interview you. We learned a lot from you and truly believe others will as well.
Twinning Store was established by twin sisters K&E in July 2017 in Los Angeles, California.
Life is too short to not celebrate being a twin. So why not flaunt it? When we couldn't find a way to do so we took matters in own hands and created Twinning Store. We now sell and ship clothing, accessories and gifts to twins and twin parents in over 30 countries around the world. Our goal is to be the number one shop for twins worldwide. Happy shopping!
