How a NYC Real Estate Broker handles Twin Parenthood
Interview with twin dad Mike Davis
How does a New York City real estate broker combine a hectic lifestyle with having become a recent twin dad?
We needed to know, so we are excited that Mike Davis (twin dad to adorable boy and girl twins, Jack and Amelie), agreed to carve out some time and let us interview him.
Read on to learn about Mike’s fear going into twin parenthood, what has surprised him about his twins and what advice he has to fellow twin parents.
WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT DO YOU DO?
My name is Mike Davis and I am a real estate broker in NY City on the 'Mike & Marta' Team at Compass. I'm also a proud husband and father of twins: Jack & Amelie (8 months old)
WHAT FASCINATES YOU THE MOST ABOUT TWINS (ESPECIALLY YOUR OWN)?
Their quick development blows me away. Eight months ago they were essentially larvae unable to make eye contact. Eight months later they are so lively and fully engaged with one another.
Each morning they wake up between 6 and squawk at each other until 7 AM when it's time to feed them. Then they are wide awake sitting patiently in their stroller and observe my wife and me work out in our building's gym.
WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST FEAR YOU HAD GOING INTO BEING A TWIN DAD?
Fear got the worst of me. I feared the worst for some reason believing maybe they'd be born with some health complication. I also had no idea how to make it work. So money and fear of financial security is also up there. But then friends reminded me that our parents and their parents figured it out. People from all around the world figure it out -- no matter what their economic situation.
WHAT HAS SURPRISED YOU THE MOST ABOUT YOUR TWINS?
Their seeming ability to rely on each other. We have friends with one kid and those kids look to parents first. We're learning twins turn to each other first -- literally.
WHAT IS THE NUMBER ONE MYTH ABOUT HAVING TWINS YOU WOULD LIKE TO DEBUNK?
Not sure I know any myths other than they have their own language... I'm not seeing them quite 'talk' yet, although they are great squawkers!
IS THERE ANY ADVICE ABOUT HAVING TWINS YOU WISH YOU HAD BEEN GIVEN?
Nope. The greatest advice I had been given by multiple twin parents is: "Get them on the same schedule." My wife got that done early and we had help from a Night Nurse agency in NYC. Thank god for that night nurse and thank god for my wife.
Women really don't get enough credit for what they have to go through and what happens to their bodies: Pumping, fatigue, stress, lack of sleep... AND WORK! The list goes on and on but can I get an 'Amen' for all the moms out there?!? They are saints.
HOW YOU WOULD ROCK A TWINNING STORE TWIN DAD T-SHIRT?
I would rock it around Brooklyn hard. ;-)
Thank you, Mike! We are in awe of how you are able to combine it all - so kudos to both you and your! And we fully agree on moms on being superwomen!
